CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

The snow was piling up against the side of the buildings in drifts. It was getting thicker underfoot. Some local traffic had moved along High Street, creating tracks, but the rest of the road was impassable.

'I thought last year was bad,' Watt said as they crossed the road.

'Beast number two is going to be remembered for a long time, that's for sure.'

They turned the corner and walked into the hospital car park.

Inside, they shook the snow off their coats.

'I want to live somewhere warm,' Julie said.

'Sounds good to me.'

They found Dr Eve Ross in the refrigeration room, just like the previous evening.

'Sergeant Watt,' she said, smiling at him. 'Thank you for coming over. You too, Sergeant Stott.'

'It's what we're here for,' Watt said.

'I have something to show you.' She had a porter with her and indicated for him to open one of the steel drawers.

When it was open, they could make out a form under the sheet.

'I just wanted to show you a bruise on Ella's forehead. Just under her hairline. It looks like she may have been punched. When you're out looking, you might want to see if somebody has bruised knuckles. It's nothing really, but I just wanted to show you. I'm no detective, mind.'

'I appreciate that,' Watt said. Then to Julie; 'Could you give us a moment, please?'

'Sure.' She left the room with the porter.

'Well, what have you got in mind, Andy Watt? Now that you have me on your own.' She smiled at him and walked up to him, put her arms round his neck and kissed him.

'I was just going to say, I liked us being together last night,' he said when she came up for air.

'Me too. How about having dinner tonight?'

'I'd like that. Your place or mine?'

She laughed and slapped him gently on the arm. 'There are a couple of restaurants in Langholm. One in the hotel, and one in the little hotel across the road from the Eskdale.'

'I don't want to be eating in the same dining room as my boss, so maybe the other restaurant? We can always go to the hotel for a drink if you like.'

'Oh, I think I'd like that very much, Andy.'

There was a knock at the door. Eve stepped back from Watt. 'Come in.'

A nurse walked in. 'Sorry to disturb you, doctor, but we got a call from Mrs Roberts' caregiver. She's not feeling well at all.'

'Thank you. I'll get right over there.'

The nurse retreated and closed the door behind her.

'I'm on-call all the time. One of the drawbacks of working in a small town.'

'It must be hard.'

'It wasn't unexpected. But if you'll excuse me, Andy. I'll call you about dinner?'

'Great. I look forward to it.'

They left the room and Watt caught up with Julie.

'Cosy wee chats with the doctor?'

'It's top secret. I could tell you, but I'd have to kill you afterwards.'

'What time are you meeting her?'

'What?'

'It's obvious she has a thing for you.'

'Away and don't talk pish, Sergeant Stott. I could report you for sexual harassment.
